From Händel till Chevalier de Saint-George
Handel composed a number of his major works for aristocraticroyal households, the public theatre and official ceremonies. Using profits from the South Sea Company and the Royal African Company, both embroiled in the overseas slave trade, he could allow himself the freedom to compose. James Brydges, one of his patrons, also had shares in these companies. For him Handel composed Esther, Acis and Galatea and the Chandos Anthems. With this programme, B’Rock shines a light on a number of dark chapters in our musical history, and on one of the first Western composers of colour, Joseph Boulogne Chevalier de Saint-George.
