In this con­cert by Ensemble Irini, Ictus and singer Varijashree Venugopal, expect a pow­er­ful dose of girl pow­er. Its focus is on the pow­er of women in the late Middle Ages, espe­cial­ly that of the Virgin Mary and a vari­ety of female saints from all over the world. Mediaeval music is com­bined with con­tem­po­rary tones, Indian singing tra­di­tions, body per­cus­sion and new work inspired by the war­rior form of the god­dess Durga from the Mahabharata. This all gives rise to a hybrid musi­cal lan­guage in which ancient Sanskrit texts coa­lesce with medi­ae­val polyphony.
