Anna-Lena Perenthaler and Lauriane Follonier illustrate how this philosophical evolution resonates in sonatas by Beethoven and Mendelssohn and in Schumann’s 5 Stücke im Volkston, which open with a humorous ‘Vanitas Vanitatum’.
