Gustav Klimt’s Beethoven Frieze represents the human yearning for happiness in a tempestuous world. The wall-to-wall painting is a commentary on Beethoven’s ninth symphony, ending in a reminiscence of Schiller’s Ode an die Freude. Together with his ensemble, jazz pianist Rembrandt Frerichs explores the European anthem and its present-day context.
