With his Via Crucis (1878−9), Franz Liszt wrote one of the most poignant ver­sions of the Passion. In this serene work, he con­dens­es the com­plete his­to­ry of music, from Gregorian hymns and Lutheran chorales to a sound world which was well ahead of his own time.
